Today’s second reading from First Corinthians is a popular selection for wedding Masses. While it is a beautiful explanation of the many aspects of love, most couples are surprised to learn that Paul was fairly upset with the Corinthians. Whichever example Paul uses for love, it is safe to assume the Corinthians were doing the opposite.
Love is one characteristic of God which humans are able to imitate (although imperfectly). Paul’s frustration with the community came from them being self-absorbed with their spiritual gifts and not sharing them for the good of others. As God shares his love with us, we are charged with sharing that which we have received with others. May we always do our best (even imperfectly) to imitate God!
